Will Oestreich, PhD (Principal Investigator)
Will explores the behavior of collectives (both non-human & human) in dynamic & changing ecosystems. He seeks to understand how biophysical ecosystem dynamics shape the ecology & evolution of collective behavior, & vice versa. Will pulls from his diverse disciplinary background in this work, integrating approaches from behavioral ecology, oceanography, bioacoustics, conservation science, & more.
Will completed his PhD in Biology at Stanford University, as well as MSc & BSc degrees in Environmental Engineering at Northwestern University. He also previously worked in research & policy roles with the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution & the Natural Resources Defense Council, respectively.
Science is fun, but for more fun, Will likes to surf, swim, make music, & search for wildlife.
Pursuing interesting interdisciplinary questions often requires collaboration. We work with a variety of outstanding researchers & groups with diverse expertise, disciplinary backgrounds, & perspectives:
The Ocean Soundscape Team at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (PI: Dr. John Ryan)
The Acoustical Ocean Ecology Team at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (PI: Dr. Kelly Benoit-Bird)
The Abrahms Lab at the University of Washington (PI: Dr. Briana Abrahms)
The Complex Ecological Systems Lab at the University of Washington (PI: Dr. Andrew Berdahl)
The Ephemeral Resource Adaptations Group at the Max Planck Institute of Animal Behavior (PI: Dr. Dina Dechmann)
The Oliver Lab at UC Santa Barbara (PI: Dr. Ruth Oliver)
The Beltran Lab at UC Santa Cruz (PI: Dr. Roxanne Beltran)
