Outreach
I value engaging and learning with communities both within and outside of academia. Such outreach can serve as a platform to provide inclusive opportunities in science for individuals from a diversity of backgrounds; influence ecosystem management; and inspire awe for the ecosystems which we are all a part of. These interactions also influence my research directions and teaching approaches.
A subset of recent outreach activities:
NASA Eclipse Soundscapes Community Science Program - soundscape ecologist (2023)
Research & outreach partnership with the Northern Chumash Tribal Council, the Monterey Bay Aquarium, & NOAA focused on soundscapes & biodiversity in the proposed Chumash Heritage National Marine Sanctuary (2022-2023)
Salinas High School Marine Science Internship Program - co-director (2020-2022)
Stanford University Biology PhD Preview Program - co-organizer (2020-2021)
Various community events (e.g., classroom visits; museum exhibits & educational programming; high school, community college, & university training & outreach)
